What is PSYCH-K®?

An experiential approach for changing limiting subconscious beliefs and creating greater alignment between what you consciously want and the deeper patterns influencing how you respond.

Sometimes we know exactly what we want to change — and still find ourselves returning to the same thoughts, reactions, habits, or patterns.

PSYCH-K® is an experiential method designed to work with subconscious beliefs that may be contributing to that gap between conscious intention and automatic response.

Rather than stopping at insight or trying to create change through willpower alone, PSYCH-K® uses specific processes — called Balances — with the intention of transforming limiting beliefs into beliefs that are more supportive of the way you want to think, feel, respond,

and live.

I use PSYCH-K® as one way of moving from understanding a pattern to intentionally working to change it.

Conscious Intention and Subconscious Beliefs

Your conscious mind can decide what you want.

I want to trust myself.
I want to set healthier boundaries.
I want to feel comfortable being seen.
I want to take better care of myself.
I want to experience a loving relationship.

And yet your automatic responses may not always seem to cooperate.

PSYCH-K® works from the premise that subconscious beliefs and associations can sometimes be inconsistent with what we consciously want. Instead of relying only on insight, affirmations, or willpower, the process is designed to work with those deeper beliefs directly.

The intention is to bring your conscious goals and subconscious beliefs into greater alignment.

What Is a PSYCH-K® Balance?

The belief-change processes used in PSYCH-K® are called Balances.

We begin by clarifying what you want to change and developing a goal statement or belief that represents the direction you want to move toward.

PSYCH-K® then uses muscle testing as part of its process for working with subconscious responses and determining the appropriate Balance. The Balance itself uses specific mind-body integration processes intended to make the new belief more available at the subconscious level.

After the Balance, we can check the goal statement again and explore what has shifted and what the new belief may mean in your everyday life.

You remain actively involved throughout the process. A Balance isn't something I do to you; it is something I facilitate with you.

How PSYCH-K® Fits Into Coach4Balance

PSYCH-K® has been an important part of my work for many years, but PSYCH-K® is not Coach4Balance — and not every coaching session needs PSYCH-K®.

Sometimes a practical conversation creates the shift that's needed. Sometimes we need to work with emotions, stress, relationships, the body, life circumstances, or deeper questions of meaning. And sometimes a recurring challenge points toward a belief or subconscious pattern that appears ready to change.

That's when PSYCH-K® may become a valuable tool within the larger process.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What kinds of beliefs or patterns can I work with?

PSYCH-K® can be used to work with beliefs connected to many different areas of life, including self-worth and confidence, relationships and boundaries, health-related behaviors, stress, work and performance, money, change, personal growth, and spirituality.

You don't necessarily need to begin with a specific belief. We can start with a situation, recurring reaction, inner conflict, or something you would like to experience differently and explore what beliefs may be relevant.

The goal isn't to search for everything that might be “wrong” in your subconscious. It's to identify beliefs or patterns that no longer serve you and work toward ones that better support how you want to live.

  • Do I need to know what my limiting belief is before the session?

No. Sometimes a belief is already obvious, but often people simply know that something isn't working the way they would like.

We can begin with what you're experiencing and what you would like to be different. From there, we clarify the direction you want to move toward and develop a supportive goal statement or belief to work with.

In other words, you don't have to arrive saying, “I know exactly what my subconscious belief is.”

Your present experience and the change you want to create are enough of a starting point.

  • Do I have to believe in PSYCH-K® for it to work?

You don't need to arrive convinced that PSYCH-K® will work or adopt a particular belief system about the subconscious mind.

I do think openness and willingness to participate in the process matter. If you strongly distrust the method or feel uncomfortable with its underlying ideas, there may simply be another approach that fits you better.

If you're curious, we can approach PSYCH-K® experientially: understand what we're doing, go through the process, and notice what—if anything—shifts for you.

Your own experience of the process matters more to me than convincing you to believe in the method.

  • Is PSYCH-K® hypnosis or positive thinking?

No. PSYCH-K® is an interactive process in which you remain consciously involved. It uses goal statements, muscle testing, and specific belief-change processes called Balances.

It is also different from simply repeating an affirmation or trying to think positively. The intention is to work with the subconscious belief connected to the change you want to create rather than relying only on conscious repetition or willpower.

That doesn't mean hypnosis, affirmations, or other approaches have no value. PSYCH-K® is simply a different way of working with change at the subconscious level.

  • What does “subconscious reprogramming” mean?

“Reprogramming the subconscious mind” is language commonly used within PSYCH-K® to describe intentionally changing subconscious beliefs that no longer support what you consciously want.

I find reprogramming a useful metaphor, with an important qualification: I don't see a human being as a computer with faulty software.

Our beliefs and automatic responses develop through experience. Some may have made sense at another point in our lives, but no longer support who we are or how we want to live today.

For me, subconscious reprogramming means intentionally working to change those beliefs and strengthen more supportive ones — not erasing your history or turning you into someone else.

  • What is the PSYCH-K® “Whole-Brain State”?

Within the PSYCH-K® model, a Whole-Brain State refers to a more bilateral, symmetrical pattern of brain activity that the method associates with its Balance processes and with greater receptivity to subconscious belief change.

PSYCH-K® Centre International points to QEEG brain-mapping research involving 125 cases that observed changes in brain-wave patterns following a PSYCH-K® Balance. The publications were co-authored by PSYCH-K® originator Rob Williams and researcher Jeffrey Fannin.

I don't believe you need to accept a particular neurological explanation in order to work with PSYCH-K®. For me, the more important question is whether the process creates a meaningful shift in the belief, response, or pattern you want to change.

  • Where did PSYCH-K® come from?

PSYCH-K® was originated in 1988 by Robert M. Williams, M.A., who had a background in counseling and psychotherapy as well as an interest in both contemporary and nontraditional approaches to personal change.

Williams developed PSYCH-K® after becoming dissatisfied with approaches that, in his experience, relied heavily on insight and motivation but didn't always produce the deeper changes he was looking for.

Over time, PSYCH-K® developed into an international training system focused on subconscious belief change, personal transformation, and spiritual growth.

  • Can PSYCH-K® treat or cure physical or mental-health conditions?

I use PSYCH-K® within coaching and personal-development work, not to diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental-health conditions.

PSYCH-K® can be used to work with beliefs, stress, behaviors, emotional responses, and attitudes related to health and well-being, but it should not replace appropriate medical or psychological care.

When health is part of our work, PSYCH-K® is one possible complementary tool within a larger approach to your well-being.
