When we are awake, our brain is in beta or even high beta (stressed) stage. Creative people have learned to pay attention to ideas they get right before they fall asleep or while waking up which is when you move from beta to alpha stage or vise versa.
Sometimes we get ideas when we sleep and dream but miss the opportunity to capture them right after waking up. Have a journal or notebook by your bed or find another way to remember ideas that come to you before or after sleep.
You can also get your brain to this early sleep state through daytime naps, meditation, or what Salvador Dali apparently did. He would place a plate on the floor next to the chair he was sitting on, hold a key or spoon in his hand and when he drifted off to sleep he would drop the key or spoon, wake up from the noise and immediately sketch the ideas that came up.
Walking is another way to get the creative juices flowing. Steve Jobs is said to have done that for a brainstorming session.
Try things out - you may be more creative than you think!
